CCI staff and LOACT team (Emanuel Osuteye from University College London, Vannesa Broto from Sheffield, and Mutafu Manda from Muzuzu University in Malawi) visited the Shaurimoyo ward development society (SHAWADESO) in Shaurimoyo Shehia in Zanzibar.
During the action at the frontline (LOACT) research meeting. SHAWADESO is a community group that has engaged themselves in waste collection within the Shaurimoyo ward since 2000, with Shaurimoyo councilor Mr.Hassan being the Founder. The group aims at improving community health through awareness creation to the community on waste management as they initiated a waste collection movement which has now changed to become an employment opportunity for the group as they earn at least 50k to 100k per person per month. The group has a total of 60 participants. Despite the waste collection which has been of positive impact on the Shaurimoyo ward and SHAWADESO they also use waste to produce manure/fertilizer which has also become a source of income for the group.
