The CCI in collaboration with Ardhi University hosted teachers and students from University College London taking Masters Degree in Environment and Sustainable Development for two weeks in the city of Mwanza. Students in different groups learned practically about existing land tenure systems within the informal settlement of Kambarage and explored in depth the issues of gender, social norms, by-laws and taboos around sanitation matters at Kigoto area.
Furthermore, students had an opportunity to interact with the Tanzania Urban Poor Federation Groups in Mwanza. They collected data regarding the grassroots co-financing for just-sanitation improvement and understood how the newly formed Mwanza City Sanitation Forum and Fund could be beneficial to most dwellers living in the informal settlements such as Mabatini through sanitation loans and subsides. On other hand, the students looked at the simplified sewerage system and closing loop to understand sanitation value chain and the end process of the chain. In general, the learning experience and scientific research done will go hand in hand with publication of policy briefs that will be translated in Kiswahili to be reach more audience in Mwanza and Tanzania in general.
